If you have an interest in audio theory then you could do a lot worse than peruse this series of articles based around Walter Murch's theories.

It's the sort of thing that crops up in film schools and stuff (or it certainly used to) and is definitely worth a read if you are not on a media course, or, your media course is not teaching you about the importance and subtleties of your sound mix. Or you could just read it because you have nothing better to :-)

Interesting article. Thanks for sharing!
I'm working on the soundtrack for a short story and there are a few action sequences that feel a bit overwhelming. I'll have to try scaling back on the layers to see if that helps.
